The relationship between diaphragm valve flow rate and valve diameter
Date: 2025-09-24Read: 14

The flow rate of a diaphragm valve is directly related to the valve diameter,This is because the diameter determines the flow area inside the valve. When the flow rate is constant, the larger the flow area, the lower the fluid velocity, and vice versa. When choosing the appropriate diameter, it is necessary to ensure sufficient flow while considering issues such as excessive resistance loss, susceptibility to damage, or electrostatic effects that may occur due to the medium flow rate being too fast
The Relationship between Flow and Path
  • Direct positive correlation:The larger the valve diameter, the larger the internal flow area, and under the same fluid conditions, the greater the flow rate that can pass through.

  • Flow and velocity are interdependent:Flow and velocity are two interdependent quantities.

    • When the flow rate is constant, the flow velocity decreases with a larger channel area (larger diameter); The smaller the channel area (diameter), the higher the flow velocity.

    • On the contrary, if the channel area is large, the flow velocity will be small; The smaller the channel area, the higher the flow velocity.

Factors to Consider when Choosing Valve Diameter
  • Required traffic:This is the main determining factor, the larger the flow rate, the larger the required valve diameter.

  • Medium flow rate:

    • Excessive flow rate can increase resistance loss and may cause valve damage.

    • For flammable and explosive media, excessive flow rate may also cause electrostatic effects.

    • A too low flow rate will reduce efficiency and cause uneconomical consequences.

  • Medium characteristics:For media with high viscosity, explosiveness, or sensitivity to flow rate, a lower flow rate should be selected.

  • Valve structure type:Even if the diameter is the same, different valve structure types will bring different resistances, affecting the flow rate passing through.

How to calculate valve diameter
Usually, the required flow rate is determined first, and then the appropriate flow rate is determined based on the characteristics of the medium. Finally, the required nominal diameter of the valve is calculated based on the flow rate and flow rate.
