Comparison of Ultrasonic Extraction and Hot Reflux Extraction Technologies
Date: 2024-06-25Read: 6
Ultrasonic extraction mainly utilizes the principle of ultrasound. Due to the inherent properties of cavitation, mechanical effects, and thermal effects of ultrasound, it has unique advantages in extracting traditional Chinese medicine. By utilizing its cavitation and mechanical effects, it can quickly act on the cell wall of Chinese medicinal plant cells, causing the separation of cellulose molecules and pectin molecules. The structure of the cell wall is disrupted, and cellular contents such as polysaccharides, flavonoids, alkaloids, starch, and other biomolecules can break through the cell wall barrier and dissolve into the extraction solvent. After centrifugation and filtration, some macromolecular substances are removed, and the desired substances are separated through methods such as macroporous resin adsorption, centrifugation, and alcohol precipitation. Overall, one major advantage is a significant increase in yield compared to traditional methods, lower energy consumption, shorter extraction time, and higher economic benefits.

Hot reflux extraction is an evolution of Soxhlet extraction and plays a significant role in the extraction of traditional Chinese medicine. It has some advantages in organic solvent extraction, such as using alcohol as the extraction solvent. Alcohol has a low boiling point, and after boiling in the extraction tank, it evaporates and refluxes back to the extraction tank when cooled, which can be reused. However, it still has some drawbacks that cannot be ignored. The boiling time is long, the energy is high, and it can damage some thermosensitive substances. Another advantage is that the extraction time is long, there are many manual operations, and the efficiency is low.
1. According to the extraction process (which is controlled by the customer), the materials are crushed to the appropriate mesh size. Some materials also need to be soaked for a period of time before extraction, and the specific length of time depends on their own process. Generally, it takes 1-2 hours. The soaking effect is that during ultrasonic extraction, the effective ingredients are prone to break through the wall and come out.
2. Inject the extraction solvent into the tank through a pump, and then heat the extraction solvent. Some tanks require steam heating. For special customer workshops or laboratories without steam, we have specially designed a heating system suitable for the extraction tank to ensure that the extraction solvent can quickly rise to the extraction temperature you need, and then manually (feeding equipment) put the material into the tank.
3. Turn on the ultrasonic system, and at the same time, the stirring motor drives the stirring teeth to rotate at a certain speed. The materials can be uniformly subjected to the action of ultrasonic mechanical waves, and the effective ingredients are quickly dissolved into the extraction solvent.
4. After a period of ultrasonic treatment, the ultrasonic extraction time varies depending on the process. The liquid is extracted and injected into a storage tank, or directly into a concentration tank to complete the ultrasonic extraction process.
