Leaf wheel anemometer is a commonly used wind speed measurement instrument
Date: 2025-12-12Read: 2
Impeller anemometerIt is a commonly used wind speed measuring instrument that measures air flow velocity by the speed at which the impeller rotates in the airflow. It is widely used in fields such as meteorology, ventilation, air conditioning, environmental monitoring, and industrial process control. Below, I will provide you with a detailed introduction to the principle, types, characteristics, and usage methods of the impeller anemometer.
1、 Working principle
The core of a bladed anemometer is a small wind turbine (usually made of lightweight metal or plastic) that is mounted on bearings for free rotation. When air flows through the wind turbine, the kinetic energy of the airflow causes the wind turbine to rotate, and the speed of the wind turbine is proportional to the air flow velocity. By measuring the rotational speed of the wind turbine, the wind speed can be converted.
There are usually two methods for measuring wind turbine speed:
1. Mechanical counting: Use gears, pointers, or mechanical counters to record the number of rotations of the wind turbine and calculate the wind speed.
2. Electronic sensing: By using photoelectric, Hall sensor or magneto electric induction device to detect the rotation frequency of the wind turbine, the signal is converted into wind speed reading, which is more accurate and convenient for data recording.
2、 Common types
1. Handheld impeller anemometer
-Lightweight and compact, convenient for quick on-site measurement.
-It is commonly used for indoor ventilation, air conditioning speed detection, and environmental monitoring.
-Most of them have digital displays that directly show wind speed and air volume.
2. Fixed impeller anemometer
-Installed in air ducts or exhaust outlets for continuous monitoring of air flow velocity.
-Often combined with air volume measurement systems, it is used for monitoring industrial exhaust, purification workshops, or ventilation systems.
3. Portable anemometer with data recording function
-It can measure wind speed, temperature, and air volume, and has data storage and export functions.
-Suitable for scientific research, laboratory and environmental monitoring work.
3、 Main features
1. Simple structure and easy to use: The mechanical structure of the impeller anemometer is relatively simple, easy to carry handheld, and convenient for on-site operation.
2. Wide measurement range: suitable for measuring low-speed, medium speed, and high-speed airflow, and some high-precision models can measure gentle winds.
3. Sensitive response: The wind turbine is directly driven by the airflow and can quickly respond to changes in wind speed.
4. Measurable air volume: By measuring the wind speed and combining it with the cross-sectional area of the air duct, the air volume can be converted, which is suitable for ventilation system design and testing.
5. Strong durability: Most impeller anemometers are made of sturdy materials, suitable for use in industrial environments.
4、 Usage method
1. Check the instrument
-Confirm that the impeller is not damaged and the bearing rotates flexibly.
-The battery is sufficient (electronic anemometer).
2. Measure wind speed
-Place the anemometer in the direction of the airflow and rotate the rotor towards the wind.
-For handheld instruments, keep the instrument in the same direction as the airflow.
-Read the wind speed value on the display screen or record the reading on the mechanical dial.
3. Measure air volume (optional)
-If air volume needs to be measured, multiply the measured wind speed by the cross-sectional area of the air duct to obtain the air volume.
4. Precautions
-Avoid contamination of the wind turbine with dust or liquid, as it may affect the rotational sensitivity and measurement accuracy.
-Not suitable for measuring high temperatures, corrosive gases, or airflows with high levels of particulate matter, unless special high-temperature resistant or corrosion-resistant models are selected.
The impeller anemometer is a simple and efficient tool for measuring air flow velocity, especially suitable for ventilation system detection, air conditioning system maintenance, and environmental monitoring. It is easy to operate, intuitive to measure, and can be combined with air volume calculation. However, to ensure measurement accuracy, it is necessary to pay attention to instrument maintenance, direction adjustment, and cleaning maintenance.
