Carbon black oxidation process
Date: 2025-04-25Read: 7
Colored carbon black is an important black pigment used in industries such as ink, coatings, and plastics. With the development of these industries, the requirements for the dispersibility, flowability, and other application properties of colored carbon black are constantly increasing. After oxidation treatment, oxygen-containing functional groups are introduced on the surface of carbon black to activate it, thereby improving its dispersibility and flowability.
Ozone is a strong oxidant, and ozone oxidation of carbon black is a typical representative of carbon black gas-phase treatment. After ozone oxidation treatment of carbon black under certain conditions, the structure of carbon black will decrease, the surface volatile content will increase, and the flowability will increase. The properties of oxidized carbon black in coatings and inks, such as viscosity, dispersibility, and flowability, will be improved.
In the entire process of carbon black ozone oxidation treatment, the ozone generator system and ozone reaction device are key equipment. The ozone oxidation of carbon black is carried out in the ozone reactor and works continuously during the production process, while large-scale production is generally in a continuous working state. The factors that need to be controlled in the process of carbon black oxidation treatment include ozone production and concentration, contact mode, reaction time, reaction temperature, and other aspects.
The treatment process of ozone oxidized carbon black
Ozone oxidation treatment of carbon black should adopt different treatment processes based on the amount of treatment, the size of the diameter, and the technical requirements of the treatment.
One method is static reaction (fixed bed oxidation method), which involves loading carbon black into a reactor and then introducing ozone while stirring the carbon black. After a period of reaction, the treatment requirements are met. This method is suitable for situations with small processing capacity and high processing quality requirements.
The second method is the dynamic reaction method (fluidized bed oxidation method), which involves introducing granular or powdered carbon black into the reactor at a certain flow rate and contacting it with ozone in reverse flow to complete the oxidation process. The reaction time should be fully controlled to achieve the best treatment effect.

Control of factors affecting ozone oxidation of carbon black
In the process of ozone oxidation of carbon black, due to the influence of ozone amount and concentration, reaction time, reaction temperature, etc., it is necessary to control various factors of ozone oxidation of carbon black to achieve the treatment effect.
In general, an increase in ozone concentration can accelerate the oxidation process and shorten the treatment time. However, since the oxidation reaction of carbon black by ozone is an exothermic reaction, attention should be paid to not raising the temperature of the reactor too high during the reaction process. Otherwise, a high temperature will accelerate the decomposition rate of ozone.
The degree of oxidation of carbon black is directly proportional to the reaction time. The longer the reaction time, the higher the degree of oxidation of carbon black. However, when a certain degree is reached, the fluidity of carbon black no longer increases. Therefore, the reaction time can be monitored by detecting the fluidity of carbon black.
The reaction temperature is another factor in the ozone oxidation of carbon black. Increasing the temperature can accelerate the reaction process, but at the same time, it also accelerates the decomposition rate. Therefore, it is necessary to control the appropriate reaction temperature.
