The Total Organic Carbon (TOC) analyzer quantifies the total amount of organic matter by oxidizing organic carbon in water and detecting the generated carbon dioxide. Its core principle can be divided into the following technical paths:
1、 Working principle
1. Oxidation stage
High temperature combustion oxidation method: Organic carbon is completely converted to CO ₂ at 680-1200 ℃, and inorganic carbon interference is removed through acidification pretreatment.
Wet oxidation method: using peroxides and other oxidants to decompose organic compounds under heating or UV light catalysis, suitable for easily oxidizable samples.
UV oxidation method: Combined with ozone or hydrogen peroxide, the oxidation reaction is excited by ultraviolet light, suitable for low concentration detection.
2. Testing phase
The generated CO ₂ is quantified using a non dispersive infrared detector (NDIR) or conductivity detector, and the data is converted to TOC concentration after calibration. Modern instruments integrate automatic sampling and inorganic carbon removal units, significantly enhancing anti-interference capabilities.
2、 Application Fields
1. Environmental monitoring
Assess the degree of water pollution, including surface water, sewage, and seawater, and support ecological restoration and discharge control.
2. Industry and pharmaceuticals
Testing pharmaceutical injection water, industrial wastewater, and cleaning validation to ensure production compliance.
3. Food safety
Monitor organic residue in beverages and food to ensure production process safety.
4. Research and Laboratory
Used for biomedical research and development, soil and air sample analysis, providing high-precision data.
3、 Technical advantages
1. Efficiency: Single detection only takes 3-5 minutes and supports batch continuous analysis.
2. Green and environmentally friendly: No or low reagent design reduces secondary pollution.
3. Multi functional adaptation: capable of synchronously detecting indicators such as total nitrogen (TN) and total inorganic carbon (TIC).
Through the above technologies, TOC analyzer has become a key tool in water quality safety, industrial production, and scientific research fields, and its accuracy and automation characteristics continue to promote the improvement of environmental monitoring standards.
