Sanitary butterfly valve: the key guardian of the clean process

In industries with high hygiene and safety requirements such as modern food, beverage, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology, the cleanliness of fluid delivery systems directly affects product quality and consumer health. Sanitary grade butterfly valves, with their structural design and strict manufacturing standards, have become the "clean guardians" of fluid control in these industries.

Core feature: Born for "hygiene"

Unlike ordinary industrial butterfly valves, sanitary butterfly valves are designed to meet strict hygiene standards, and their core characteristics are reflected in:

1. Materials and surface treatment: The main overcurrent components (valve body, valve plate, valve stem) are widely made of high-quality 316L stainless steel, which has excellent corrosion resistance and non toxicity. The most crucial aspect is that the surface in contact with the medium must be highly polished to achieve an extremely low surface roughness (usually requiring Ra ≤ 0.8 μ m). This mirror like smoothness effectively prevents microbial growth and material residue, ensuring the purity of the fluid.

2. Aseptic structure design: Adopting seamless design without gaps (such as welded valve body) or precision machined clamps/threaded connections. The valve stem usually adopts a top mounted design to avoid penetrating the valve chamber and eliminate potential pollution traps. The edge of the valve plate is precisely matched with the sealing surface of the valve seat, ensuring no stagnant area when closed.

3. Compliant sealing materials: The sealing ring (valve seat) is made of elastic materials that have passed relevant health certifications (such as FDA, EU 1935/2004, USP Class VI), such as EPDM (high temperature and steam resistance), silicone rubber (low temperature and broad-spectrum chemical resistance), fluororubber (FKM, high temperature and chemical resistance), etc., to ensure non-toxic, odorless, and non precipitating properties, meeting the safety requirements for food and drug contact.

4. Easy to clean and sterilize (CIP/SIP): The smooth inner cavity and streamlined design allow cleaning solution (CIP) and sterilization steam (SIP) to pass through and cover all contact surfaces, making it easy to achieve online cleaning and sterilization of the system, meeting frequent hygiene processing needs.

Structure and working principle: concise and efficient

The sanitary butterfly valve has a relatively simple structure:

Valve body: It is usually a short structure, straight through type, with sanitary grade clamps, threads, and Butt Weld as the main connection methods to ensure smooth and unobstructed connections.

Valve plate: disc-shaped, rotating around its axis inside the valve body. Its edge contour is precisely matched with the valve seat.

Valve stem: It transmits torque to drive the valve plate to rotate, usually designed as a single section stem, extending from the top of the valve body to avoid contact with the medium inside the valve chamber.

Valve seat: The elastic sealing ring installed on the valve body or valve plate is the key to achieving sealing.

Execution mechanism: manual (handle, handwheel), pneumatic or electric, used to drive the valve stem to rotate.

The working process is simple and intuitive: by rotating the valve stem 90 °, the valve plate is driven from the fully open position parallel to the pipeline axis to the fully closed position perpendicular to the pipeline axis, achieving the opening and closing or flow regulation of the fluid medium. Its characteristics of low flow resistance, rapid opening and closing, and easy operation have obvious advantages in hygiene processes that require rapid control.
