Precautions for using specialized storage cabinets for toxic substances
Date: 2025-12-26Read: 7
A specialized storage cabinet for toxic substances is a specialized equipment for storing highly toxic chemicals, toxic substances, and other dangerous goods. Its correct use is crucial for ensuring personnel safety and preventing environmental pollution. The following are key precautions to be taken when using specialized storage cabinets for toxic substances:
1、 Selection and installation of storage cabinets
Material and Structure: The storage cabinet should be made of corrosion-resistant materials (such as polypropylene or specially coated steel plates) to ensure that the thickness of the cabinet is not less than 1.2 millimeters, and the joints should be sealed to prevent leakage and corrosion. The cabinet should be equipped with explosion-proof ventilation openings and sealed doors, with door gaps not exceeding 3 millimeters, to reduce the risk of gas leakage.
Installation location: Choose a well ventilated, dry, and away from sources of fire, heat, and densely populated areas, such as independent laboratories or dedicated storage rooms. The cabinet should be placed against the wall, at least 0.5 meters away from the wall and heat source, and avoid direct sunlight. Ensure that the cabinet is stable, prevent tipping, and leave an evacuation passage of at least 1 meter.
2、 Storage and Classification Management
Classified storage: Strictly store according to the chemical properties in different zones, and prohibit mixing taboo materials (such as strong acids and bases). Toxic substances should be isolated from other hazardous materials (such as flammable liquids or corrosive substances) using dedicated cabinets or independent compartments.
Container and labeling: Liquid chemicals should be placed upright with the bottle cap tightened; Solid chemicals should be sealed and packaged to prevent volatilization or moisture. Post a risk notification card outside the cabinet, indicating the product name, quantity, hazardous characteristics, and emergency telephone number, and set up prominent warning signs (such as "toxic" labels).
3、 Operation and usage standards
Access operation: Handle chemicals with care to avoid collision with cabinets or containers. Mixing or stirring operations are strictly prohibited inside the cabinet. Immediately close the cabinet door after each use, following the principle of "take as much as you need" to reduce exposure risks.
Safety protection: Operators are required to wear personal protective equipment such as chemical resistant gloves, goggles, and gas masks. No debris shall be piled up within 0.5 meters around the cabinet, and the passage shall be kept unobstructed. It is prohibited to use it as a temporary workbench.
4、 Safety protection and emergency measures
Protective configuration: The area where the cabinet is located should be equipped with eye wash stations, emergency sprinkler systems, and absorbent materials (such as activated carbon) to cope with leakage or contact accidents. For highly toxic chemicals, it is necessary to set up a dual lock management system with two people, and the keys should be kept separately by dedicated personnel.
Leakage handling: In the event of a leak, immediately activate the emergency plan, use specialized adsorption materials to control diffusion, and avoid direct contact. The ventilation system should be able to effectively discharge volatile gases and prevent concentration accumulation.
5、 Maintenance and Inspection
Regular inspection: Check the sealing, ventilation openings, and grounding devices of the cabinet every month to ensure that the anti-static grounding resistance is not greater than 100 Ω. Conduct a comprehensive inspection every six months and record maintenance status.
Cleaning and maintenance: Use neutral cleaning agents to regularly wipe the cabinet to avoid corrosion. The ventilation filter screen needs to be cleaned regularly to prevent blockage. If the cabinet is damaged or has abnormal functions, immediately stop using it and repair it.
6、 Other precautions
Personnel training: Operators need to receive professional training and be familiar with Chemical Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and emergency procedures. New employees should pass an assessment before taking up their positions.
Compliance: Comply with regulations such as the "Regulations on the Safety Management of Hazardous Chemicals" and ensure that storage cabinets comply with national standards (such as GB 2894-2008). Highly toxic chemicals also need to meet security and prevention requirements, such as monitoring and alarm systems.
By following the above precautions, the safety risks during the storage of toxic substances can be effectively reduced, ensuring the health of personnel and environmental safety.
