What are the differences and similarities between plate and frame filter presses, box filter presses, and diaphragm filter presses
Date: 2025-10-25Read: 10
The similarity between plate and frame filter presses, box filter presses, and diaphragm filter presses is that their working principles are basically the same. They all belong to filter presses and are used for solid-liquid separation. They all have basic components such as filter plates and filter cloth in their structures. Their differences are mainly reflected in the following aspects:
  • Filter plate structure

    • plate and frame filter pressThe filter plate is composed of two parts: the filter plate and the filter frame. The filter chamber is composed of two solid filter plates and a frame filter plate that are interlocked and spliced together.

    • box filter pressThe filter plate is a single piece with a concave center forming the filter chamber, and most manufacturers use the middle feeding method.

    • Diaphragm filter pressThere are air inlet holes on the side of the filter plate, and the middle is hollow. The filter chamber is composed of solid filter plates and hollow filter plates arranged at intervals. The hollow filter plate has diaphragm type chambers on both sides.

  • Filter cloth style

    • plate and frame filter pressUse a square filter cloth and place it directly between the filter plates.

    • box filter pressThe filter cloth passes through the middle hole of the space and wraps around each filter plate.

    • Diaphragm filter pressTwo filter cloths are used, connected in the middle to form a single filter cloth. Using a wrapping method, one of the two layers is passed through a small hole in the middle of the filter plate and then spread flat to wrap the filter plate.

  • working process

    • plate and frame filter pressThe work is divided into four processes: compression, feeding, washing (or air drying), and cake unloading. The suspended hydraulic pressure is pumped into the filter chamber by the feed pump, forming filter residue on the filter cloth. The filtrate passes through the filter cloth and flows along the filter plate groove to the corner channel of the plate frame, and is discharged centrally.

    • box filter pressIn the filtration stage, materials are pumped into the filter chamber, solid particles are intercepted by the filter cloth, and liquids are discharged through the filter cloth; During the unloading stage, after the filtration is completed, the filter plate is opened and the filter cake falls off by gravity or scraper device.

    • Diaphragm filter pressOn the basis of the filtration stage of the box filter press, a pressing stage is added, in which compressed air or water is injected into the diaphragm, and the diaphragm expands to perform secondary pressing on the filter cake, further reducing the moisture content of the filter cake, and then discharging.

  • Filtering efficiency and effectiveness

    • plate and frame filter pressThe filtration efficiency is relatively low, and the moisture content of the filter cake is generally between 75% and 80%.

    • box filter pressThe filtration efficiency is relatively low, and the moisture content of the filter cake is usually 25% -40%.

    • Diaphragm filter pressDue to its secondary pressing function, it can significantly reduce the moisture content of the filter cake, usually to 15% -30%, with high filtration efficiency.

  • Scope of Application

    • plate and frame filter pressSuitable for solid-liquid separation of various suspensions, especially for materials with fine particles and high viscosity, but with relatively small processing capacity.

    • box filter pressSuitable for materials with low concentration and low viscosity, such as sewage treatment, coal washing plants, ceramic raw materials, etc., which do not require high moisture content.

    • Diaphragm filter pressSuitable for high concentration and high viscosity materials, as well as occasions with strict requirements for filter cake moisture content, such as mining tailings, chemical sludge, food processing waste, etc. It is also suitable for high value-added product fields such as pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals that require high filter cake quality.

  • Equipment cost and maintenance

    • plate and frame filter pressThe structure is relatively simple, the equipment cost is low, and the maintenance difficulty is relatively small.

    • box filter pressSimple structure, low equipment cost, and easy maintenance.

    • Diaphragm filter pressThe structure is complex and the equipment cost is high. Due to the need for additional pressing steps and components such as diaphragms, maintenance is difficult and energy consumption is also high.
