Working principle and application of infrared temperature sensor
Date: 2025-09-12Read: 6
Infrared temperature sensor is a non-contact temperature measurement device based on the infrared radiation characteristics of objects. Its core principle is to calculate the surface temperature by detecting the infrared energy emitted by the target object. The following is a detailed explanation of its working principle and application:
1、 Working principle
1. Fundamentals of Infrared Radiation
All objects with temperatures above absolute zero (-273.15 ℃) emit infrared radiation, whose intensity is positively correlated with the temperature of the object. The sensor focuses the infrared radiation of the target object through an optical lens and converts it into an electrical signal.
2. Signal Conversion and Processing
Optoelectronic sensor: Utilizing the photoelectric effect, photons excite electronic transitions in semiconductor materials, and the radiation intensity is calculated by measuring the photocurrent intensity.
Thermoelectric sensor: Based on the pyroelectric effect or thermoelectric effect, it converts radiated energy into electrical signals, and then outputs temperature values through environmental temperature compensation and algorithm processing.
3. Key influencing factors
Emissivity: The radiation characteristics of different materials (such as metal 0.1-0.3, skin 0.98) need to be calibrated.
Measurement distance: It is necessary to ensure that the target fully covers the sensor field of view, with a typical range of 1-30 meters.
2、 Application scenarios
1. Industrial sector
High temperature molten metal and power equipment monitoring to avoid interference from contact measurement on equipment.
Real time temperature detection of moving objects (such as products on conveyor belts).
2. Medical and Public Safety
Non contact thermometers (such as forehead thermometers and ear thermometers) achieve rapid temperature measurement by focusing on human infrared radiation.
Used for temperature screening of the population during the epidemic.
3. Transportation and Meteorology
The road surface temperature sensor monitors the road surface temperature remotely (2-15 meters) through infrared thermopile technology, supporting continuous data collection in rainy and snowy weather.
