Interpretation of Polarization Stress Analyzer for Internal Stress Determination in Glass Containers in Pharmacopoeia 4003, 2025 Edition
Date: 2025-05-15Read: 6

Are you curious about how the polarizing stress meter, like a magical * *, accurately detects the hidden "killer" of internal stress in glass? The mystery behind this lies in the principle of polarized light interference, which is like a magical key that unlocks the door to detecting internal stresses in glass.

Glass is usually considered an isotropic homogeneous material. However, when internal stress quietly exists inside the glass, the situation changes and the glass exhibits anisotropy. At this point, the wonderful phenomenon of birefringence of light occurs. It's like a calm lake surface being shattered by the internal stress of this stone, creating layers of ripples. When a beam of polarized light passes through a glass with internal stress, it seems to be enchanted and will decompose into two beams of polarized light with vibration directions perpendicular to each other. They act like two travelers with different steps, advancing at different speeds in the glass, resulting in an optical path difference. This optical path difference is not a simple physical quantity. It is like the "spokesperson" for the internal stress in glass, and its magnitude is closely related to the magnitude of the internal stress. The greater the internal stress, the greater the optical path difference.

Polarization Stress Tester BLY-06It is precisely by cleverly utilizing this principle that it works. The polarization stress meter has a precise optical system inside. When the white light emitted by the light source first passes through the polarizer, it is like passing through a strict "filter", and only light vibrating in a specific direction can pass through, thus becoming linearly polarized light. This linearly polarized light then embarked on an "adventure journey", passing through the tested glass sample. If there is internal stress in the glass sample, this polarized light will undergo birefringence, and the two polarized light beams decomposed will produce an optical path difference. Subsequently, the light continues to move forward and passes through a quarter wave plate. At this point, the vibration direction of the two beams of light will rotate by an angle θ, and the value of this angle θ (in degrees) is proportional to the birefringence optical path difference T of the tested sample. There is a clear mathematical relationship between them: T=565 θ/180=3.14 θ. In this way, when there is internal stress in the tested glass sample, the angle θ can be accurately measured by rotating the analyzer, and the birefringence optical path difference T of the tested sample can be easily calculated according to the above formula, thus obtaining the key data of internal stress in the glass.

In order to make the detection more accurate and comprehensive, the polarization stress meter is also equipped with sensitive color plates and 1/4 wave plate compensation methods. Sensitive color chips are like "color translators" that can change according to the wavelength of light. They can cleverly compensate for the optical path difference caused by birefringence, making the measurement of optical path difference more accurate. A quarter wave plate acts as a 'thickness balancer', compensating for the optical path difference caused by uneven sample thickness. During the detection process, when light passes through a glass sample with internal stress, interference color sequences are generated. By observing the changes in these interference color sequences, it is like deciphering a mysterious code. We can qualitatively or semi quantitatively measure the optical path difference of the glass and infer the magnitude of the stress inside the glass. For example, when the interference color sequence presents a specific color and pattern, it indicates that the internal stress in the glass is within a certain range. The polarization stress meter produced by Jinan Ruilaibo Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd. performs particularly well when using the principle of polarization interference for detection. It can quickly and accurately measure the internal stress of glass, providing reliable data support for your glass packaging quality inspection.
