High efficiency filters, commonly known as HEPA filters, are efficient filter materials used for air purification, capable of capturing extremely fine particles and providing a clean air environment. HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air. According to the standard, a true HEPA filter must be able to remove at least 99.97% of particles with a diameter of 0.3 micrometers (µ m) from the air.
The filter screen of a HEPA filter is composed of very small, randomly arranged fibers (usually glass fibers), and its filtration mechanism is much more complex than simple screening, mainly including four physical effects:
1. Intercept effect:
When larger particles move with the airflow and directly contact the fiber surface, they will be "hooked" and left behind. This mainly targets larger particles.
2. Inertia effect:
When heavier or faster particles pass through fibers in the airflow, they cannot bypass the fibers due to inertia and will directly hit the fibers and be captured. This is mainly effective for particles with large mass and high velocity.
3. Diffusion effect:
For extremely small particles (mainly less than 0.1 micrometers), they undergo irregular "Brownian motion" due to continuous collisions with air molecules. This random movement greatly increases their chances of coming into contact with fibers and being adsorbed. The smaller the particles, the more significant this effect becomes.
4. Electrostatic effect (some HEPA filters have it):
Some filter fibers carry static charges and can attract particles with opposite or neutral charges like magnets, thereby enhancing capture efficiency.
