Process flow of laboratory ozone generator
Date: 2025-07-10Read: 7
The laboratory ozone generator is mainly based on the principle of high-voltage discharge (the most common being dielectric barrier discharge DBD) to convert oxygen into ozone. The process steps are as follows:
1、 Gas source preparation:
1. Oxygen supply: High purity (≥ 90%) oxygen is used (provided by bottles or oxygen concentrators), or dry and clean air (subject to strict filtration, dehumidification, and oil removal treatment) is used. When using air, consideration should be given to the generation of nitrogen oxides.
2. Pre treatment: The gas must pass through precision filters (to remove particulate matter and oil) and deep dryers (such as molecular sieves or freeze-drying, with dew points typically below -60 ° C). Moisture can greatly reduce ozone production and corrode equipment.
2、 Discharge reaction unit:
1. The pre treated dry oxygen is introduced into the discharge chamber (or ozone generating tube/unit).
2. In the discharge chamber, gas flows through a narrow gap (usually 0.1-3 mm) between the high-voltage electrode and the grounding electrode, exposed to a strong electric field.
3. An insulating medium (such as a quartz tube) wraps around one of the electrodes to ensure a uniform "silent discharge" (countless micro discharges) and avoid the formation of destructive arcs.
3、 Energy Conversion (Ozone Synthesis):
1. The high-frequency and high-voltage power supply provides energy and generates plasma in the discharge gap.
2. High energy electrons collide with O ₂ molecules, efficiently generating O3 through the aforementioned reaction pathway.
3. Ozone concentration is closely related to parameters such as gas flow rate, oxygen purity, discharge power, discharge gap design, and cooling efficiency.
4、 Cooling system:
1. Forced cooling: The discharge process generates a large amount of heat (with an energy utilization rate of about 10-20%, most of which is converted into heat). Efficient cooling is key, usually using:
External circulating cooling water: The cooling water circulates in the jacket surrounding the outer wall (grounding electrode side) of the discharge chamber.
Internal refrigerant channel: Some designs allow cooling water or oil to flow directly through the inside of the electrode.
2. Purpose: To maintain a low temperature in the discharge chamber (ideal temperature 10-25 ° C), prevent high-temperature decomposition of ozone (O3 decomposition significantly accelerates when>35 ° C), and protect electrodes and dielectric materials.
5、 Ozone output and control:
1. The generated ozone containing gas (O3/O ₂ mixture) is discharged from the outlet of the discharge chamber.
2. Concentration detection: It is usually equipped with an online ozone concentration detector (such as UV absorption method) to monitor the concentration of O3 in the outlet gas in real time (unit: g/m ³ or wt%).
3. Flow control: Accurately adjust the intake flow rate through a mass flow controller.
4. Power regulation: By adjusting the output voltage or frequency of the high-frequency power supply, the input power is controlled to regulate ozone production and concentration.
6、 Security protection:
1. Exhaust gas destruction: Unused ozone or residual ozone after the experiment must be converted into harmless oxygen through an ozone disruptor (equipped with a catalyst such as MnO ₂ or a heating decomposition unit) before being discharged.
2. Leak monitoring: Ozone leak detectors need to be installed in the laboratory environment.
3. Overload protection: The power system has overvoltage, overcurrent, and short-circuit protection.
