Light glueThe role of solvents is reflected in many fields where they are not suitable, such as inSemiconductor and chip fieldsIf solvents are used, the cost will be high and increase the burden on manufacturers.Photo-DSCIt can quickly analyze the curing profile and measure the energy of the curing reaction.
Due to the rapid and high-energy reactions triggered by light, obtaining good data requires excellentTemperature controllabilityandresponsivenessButPower compensation instrumentIt is the best choice for this type of application.
1 experiment
We use a device with UV irradiation functionPerkinElmer DSC 8000 SystemYou can use a dedicated DSC sample disk with a quartz cover or an open disk. Heat or cool the sample to an isothermal temperature to achieve thermal equilibrium. passPyris ™ softwareTrigger the shutter of the light source to turn on and off the light source that illuminates the sample. Collect data at different intensities and times to find the optimal curing cycle for the material.
2 Advantages of power compensation design
DSC 8000(Figure 1) is an ideal choice for conducting such research, as the power compensation design of the instrument can quickly detect and respond to changes in optical materials.
The initial transient is extremely short, usually around 12 seconds, which means that during this period, rapid reactions can obtain accurate measurements without causing significant energy loss. The power compensation design ensures true isothermal operation, with power adjusted to maintain the required isothermal temperature. Power compensation can also be displayed on the screen, so even if the temperature rises rapidly, the instrument can quickly respond and receive compensation. In fact, the extremely fast energy response of power compensation systems can reach up to100 per secondThe fast data acquisition rate and extremely wide dynamic energy range of data points are prerequisites for controlling and measuring rapid energy responses.

The high sensitivity and excellent temperature control of DSC 8000 make it particularly suitable for demanding applications such as UV curing research.
►The energy recorded in all reactions is shown in Figure 2.
A sufficiently stable design also means that the curve subtraction process (usually used as part of measurement techniques) is completely quantitative. The transient time of a single furnace design (heat flow) system is significantly longer, making it difficult to control rapid energy reactions. Measurements can only be taken when the temperature deviates from isothermal, and therefore, true isothermal operation cannot be achieved.

Figure 2. UV cured materials are commonly used as adhesives. UV light generates a free radical that causes the material to solidify.
3 result
►When the UV light source is triggered, the sample is exposed to UV light.
►The material undergoes polymerization and begins to solidify, releasing heat.
►The peak energy can be used to calculate the kinetics during the curing process.
Figure 3 is a case study. After 3 minutes of exposure to light for 30 seconds, an exothermic reaction occurs, causing the material to crosslink and begin to solidify. Due to the fact that the material itself is a solvent, it does not lose volatile substances, thus minimizing pollution to the circuit board. From the thermal spectrum, we can see that the maximum heat release value appears quickly after illumination, which emphasizes the necessity of rapid response. We need to calculate the energy of the reaction from the area under the peak, so compensating for the thermal impact of the UV lamp is very important.
The exposure time and number of exposures may vary depending on the material used.Using a filter at a UV light source can change the frequency and intensity of light.Due to the heat generated by UV light sources, the temperature control of DSC must be able to compensate for the energy from the lamp tube.
