The EDI membrane stack is mainly composed of alternating cation exchange membranes, concentrated water chambers, anion exchange membranes, fresh water chambers, and positive and negative electrodes. Under the action of a direct current electric field, cations and anions in the ion exchange resin in the freshwater chamber migrate along the channels formed by the resin and membrane towards the negative and positive directions, respectively. Cations pass through the cation exchange membrane, anions pass through the anion exchange membrane, and enter the concentrated water chamber to form concentrated water. At the same time, the cations and anions in the EDI inlet are exchanged with the hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions in the ion exchange resin to form ultrapure water (high-purity water). The current causes a large amount of hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions generated by water electrolysis to continuously work on the ion exchange resin.

EDI can replace traditional mixed ion exchange technology (MB-DI) to produce stable deionized water. EDI technology has the following advantages compared to mixed ion exchange technology:

1. The amount of ion exchange resin used is relatively small, about 5% of the amount of resin used in traditional ion exchange methods.

2. Ion exchange resin does not require acid, saving a lot of acid, alkali, and cleaning water, and reducing labor intensity.

3. No waste acid or alkali liquid discharge, it is a clean production technology.

4. The process is automatically controlled, and the quality of the produced water is stable. Combined with RO and other water treatment technologies, it can form a complete production line for pure water and ultrapure water.

5. The quality of the produced water is high and can meet the national electronic grade water I standard, with a resistivity of 18M Ω· cm.

6. The pure water production process is carried out continuously, without the need to repeatedly set up one set in use like an ion exchange bed
