A Comprehensive Analysis of the Principle, Structure, and Application of High Speed Stirring Emulsification Tank
Date: 2025-09-11Read: 7
High speed mixing and emulsification tank is one of the core equipment in modern fine chemical, food, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries. It has become a key device for preparing high-quality lotion, suspensions, creams and slurries with its efficient and uniform mixing, dispersion, emulsification and homogenization capabilities. This article will delve into its working principle, core structure, technical characteristics, application areas, and key selection and operation points.
1、 Working principle: Strong shear force field
The core working principle of high-speed mixing and emulsification tank is based on strong shear, turbulence, and cavitation effects in mechanical fluid dynamics. The process is far from comparable to ordinary stirring.
1. Shear dominant: The core of the equipment is a high-speed rotating rotor and a fixed stator. When the rotor rotates at a speed of hundreds to thousands of revolutions per minute under the drive of the motor, a high linear velocity is formed in the small gap between the rotor and the stator, resulting in a huge shear force.
2. Working process: The material is first sucked axially into the rotor area. Under the strong centrifugal force, the material is thrown towards the narrow slit of the stator. At the moment of high-speed flow through these tiny slits, the material is subjected to intense shear, impact, and tearing, and macroscopic clumps or droplets are quickly broken into micro - or even nano scale fine particles.
3. Comprehensive effect: At the same time, turbulence and cavitation effects also work together to ensure homogeneous emulsification in a very short period of time, forming a uniformly distributed and highly stable dispersed system.
2、 Core Structure and Components
A complete high-speed mixing and emulsification tank is a precision system that integrates multiple functions, and its main components include:
1. Tank body:
Material: SUS304 or SUS316L stainless steel is usually used, which has good corrosion resistance and hygiene, and meets the requirements of GMP, FDA and other specifications.
Structure: It is mostly a double-layer design with a jacket, which can be filled with steam, thermal oil or cooling medium to achieve heating, insulation or cooling functions for materials. The can lid can be opened (for feeding) or fixed (for feeding through manholes), usually equipped with mirrors, light holes, cleaning balls, various interfaces (such as vacuum, feeding, temperature measurement), etc.
2. Stirring and emulsification system:
Main motor: Provides power, usually a variable frequency explosion-proof motor, allowing for stepless speed regulation to adapt to viscosity changes in different process stages.
Transmission device: including reducer, coupling, etc., used to transmit power and change the speed.
Emulsifying head (homogenizer): This is the heart of the device. The most common is the rotor stator emulsion head, which has various structures such as serrated, orifice plate, ring, etc., designed for different viscosity and particle size requirements. In addition, high shear emulsification tanks may also be integrated with colloid mills or high shear dispersion homogenizers to obtain finer particle sizes.
3. Auxiliary mixing system:
In order to eliminate mixing dead corners and form a complete circulation of materials in the tank, a set of frame, anchor or blade type slow scraping wall agitators is usually equipped. Its rotational speed is relatively low, and its main function is to continuously scrape and send the material from the tank wall and bottom into the action area of the high-speed emulsifying head, ensuring heat exchange efficiency and global uniformity.
4. Control system:
Modern equipment is equipped with PLC or touch screen control systems. It can accurately set and record process parameters such as speed, temperature, time, and vacuum degree, achieve automated production, ensure consistency and reproducibility of each batch of products, and meet data integrity requirements.
5. Vacuum system:
Many emulsion tanks are equipped with vacuum devices. Operating in a vacuum state can remove bubbles from the material during the mixing process, prevent product oxidation, and improve product density and glossiness; It can also be used to remove volatile components or odors.
6. Lifting and flipping system:
Part of the design includes an emulsifying head and tank cover that can be lifted and lowered by hydraulic or electric means, making it easy to clean and maintain the equipment. The tank can sometimes be designed in a form that can be flipped for discharge.
3、 Significant technical features
1. Efficiency: It can complete the emulsification process in a very short time, with high production efficiency.
2. Excellent emulsification quality: The obtained product has small particle size, narrow distribution range, stable system, long shelf life, and delicate and smooth texture.
3. Functional integration: integrating heating, cooling, stirring, homogenization, emulsification, vacuum, and scraping into one machine, versatile.
4. High hygiene level: Adopting mirror polishing, sterile mechanical seal, supporting CIP (online cleaning) and SIP (online sterilization), meeting strict hygiene standards.
5. Convenient operation: Automated control, precise parameter setting and storage, reducing manual operation intensity and skill requirements.
4、 Widely applicable fields
1. Cosmetics industry: facial cleanser, face cream, lotion, essence, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, liquid foundation, etc.
2. Food industry: fruit juice, sauces (salad dressing, tomato sauce), dairy products, seasonings, cream, ice cream, chocolate syrup, etc.
3. Pharmaceutical industry: ointment, cream, suppository, oral liquid, suspension, gel, fat emulsion injection, etc.
4. Chemical industry: coatings, inks, adhesives, pesticides, emulsified asphalt, lubricants, nanomaterials dispersion, etc.
5、 Selection and operation points
Selection considerations:
Material properties: viscosity, solid content, particle hardness, pH value.
Capacity requirement: Batch processing capacity (tank volume).
Finished product indicators: target particle size and distribution.
Process requirements: Whether heating/cooling, vacuum, explosion-proof, etc. are required.
Materials and standards: Select appropriate materials and certifications according to industry regulations.
Precautions for operation and maintenance:
Feeding sequence: Usually, the aqueous phase is first put into the tank, followed by slow stirring, then slowly adding the oil phase, and finally starting high-speed emulsification to prevent clumping.
Avoid idling: The high-speed emulsifying head must be started below the material immersion, otherwise it will damage the mechanical seal.
Regular maintenance: Check and replace mechanical seals, lubricate moving parts regularly, and keep equipment clean.
