The total volume of MBfR (membrane bioreactor) is 2356mL, of which the volume of hollow fibers used for gas transport is 11mL and the volume of fiber material is 45mL.

The working volume of MBfR for liquid flow and biofilm growth is 2300mL. MBfR consists of 12 bundles of hollow fiber membranes, and methane is injected into the membrane cavity through a gas cylinder.

Each bundle consists of 500 hollow fibers (non porous polypropylene hollow fibers), with a length of 30 cm, inner and outer fiber diameters of 90/200 μ m, and a total membrane surface area of 1.13m2.

One end of all fibers is connected to a methane cylinder (95% methane+5% carbon dioxide). The gas pressure of the internal hollow fibers is manually adjusted at 250 kPa by a regulator connected to the gas cylinder,

And monitored by a gas pressure gauge.

Use a 20L inlet tank to store synthetic wastewater containing nitrite and ammonia nitrogen. Therefore, to ensure the anaerobic operation of MBfR, a 20L nitrogen filled airbag was connected to the feed tank.

Artificially synthesized wastewater enters the reactor through the inlet pump. The mixing of the reactor was ensured by using a peristaltic pump for liquid reflux (600mL/min).

A 330ml overflow bottle was established to release the gas generated in MBfR and monitor the pH value of the system through a pH meter. By manually injecting 1M hydrochloric acid or 1M sodium hydroxide solution every day,

Maintain the pH value of the system at 7.0-8.0.
